I made it a goal to run a ½ marathon by my 36th birthday in October. Each week I will share my lessons learned during my training. I am using the Coach option on the Nike running app. The week starts on a Sunday and each day the app tells you how many miles you need to run or if you have a rest day or if you need to do some other form of exercise. It also gives you little tips for each day on how to go about your run.
August 2nd thru August 8th lessons learned:
- Plan & Prepare: I knew that I would have to get at least 4 runs in this week 3-4 miles each day. I had to plan out my days and times. I was not able to run on each day the app wanted me to but I was able to do four days. I run in the mornings when because that works for me and my family/work life. I pack my gym back on Sundays and get my running clothes out the night before to avoid the extra time to looking for things to wear. This planning and prepping has saved time and made it easier for me to get up and workout.
- Don’t Depend on Technology: Technology let me down this week. My Polar heartrate monitor went out during my run. I was not able to track my calories and that is something I want to track on a daily basis. I also had an issue with my Nike running app on my phone. I had it set for the treadmill from an earlier run in the week so when I was running outside it was off. Good thing I ran the route several times and knew the distant and could keep time on my phone.
- Just Do It: I stated I run early mornings with Black Girls Run so I have to leave my house at 4:20 am to make the 5:00 am run. At least two mornings last week I really wanted to stay in my bed. And on Wednesday I actually did and I had to run on the treadmill. I had to push myself to get up and Just Do It…no second guessing or excuses to be made. I just had to get up and go.
